Troubleshooting Tips for Smoke Detectors

Electronic and battery-operated devices can malfunction during unexpected times. Even with top brands, there is always the possibility of devices conking out. Smoke detectors are not exempted from this. If not properly maintained and checked regularly, they can make false smoke alarms.

Homeowners should make sure to test their smoke detectors at least once a month. This is to ensure that it’s still working. Doing this monthly test will also help you determine if your smoke alarm needs troubleshooting. You would know a fix-up is needed if the device no longer sounds during testing.

Each smoke detector has a test button which you can push to find out if it emits a sound. While you’re standing near the detector (you should be at least six inches below it), light a candle and then blow off the light right away to create smoke. Once you have a smoldering candle, get any material that can fan the smoke towards the smoke alarm.

Failing battery

A new battery is needed if the sound from your smoke detector is already chirping. Remember this type of sound as this is a sign of a weak battery. In order for your smoke alarm to function well, do change its battery at least once every year. If you have a multimeter, you can use it to test the battery voltage.

Keep it clean

Proper maintenance is required for any home appliance or device. For your smoke detector, make sure to clean it inside and out using a vacuum. Dust can build up inside and insects can also get clogged which could result in the failure of the device to detect smoke. The sensor and the horn could also be affected which could lead to the failure of the smoke alarm to emit an alarm sound during testing. In some cases, dust buildup in the alarm sensor could initiate a sound unexpectedly. If you don’t want this to happen, then observe cleanliness in your home at all times.

Check wirings

For AC-powered smoke detectors that don’t work when you test them, check that their wirings are properly connected below the casing. Some wirings may have loosened through time. If you find that the wirings are damaged, you may want to have a technician check your device before you purchase a new one to replace the damaged unit.

You would know if your smoke alarm system in the home is working properly because every device in the house will sound off during testing. This means that all are communicating well with each other. Sometimes, the malfunctioning of smoke detectors can also be triggered by fluctuations in electricity. This is something to watch out for when checking the condition of your device.

Right position

Smoke detectors need to be installed in the proper position. They should be approximately 20 feet away from ovens and furnaces and 10 feet away from areas with high levels of humidity such as the bathroom. Be conscious about positioning your smoke alarms in the right area otherwise, they could sound off false alarms. It’s best to get a manual for troubleshooting when you purchase a smoke detector. You may also want to ask for additional tips from the manufacturer or from the store’s technician.
